Patty 's Story

I, Miss Pattie Shoemaker, was a full-fledged Air Force Officer's brat coming to Foster Village on Oahu as a 5th grader from Grand Forks AFB North Dakota and prior Columbus AFB Mississippi. Made it through Pearl Harbor Elementary, Aliamanu JH & two & 1/2 years at Radford and of course had to move again. Was on the Radford Royalette's baton squad for 2 1/2 years, one as captain 72-73, where we took tons of first place trophies in school competition parades, twirled fire, ribbon, knife & flashlight batons at home football and basketball games, as well as invited to twirl at the Aloha Bowl (way before the new stadium) and the World Twirling Competition. [Hey, went to Radford two years ago and could not find ANY of our Baton trophies won by my Royalette Squad in 71-73 and they were huge! Not in the office or the gym--it's like the Royalette's didn't even exist. Anyone know where they are?] Moved to Colorado Springs mid 73 (what a tan I had!) and attended Wasson HS truly hoping that I would find the same good baton squad. No such luck--I tried out for the 4 person squad in November of my Junior year with the band director asking me to toss up my baton as high as I could (and of course catch it.) I guess the height & catch were the determining factors so he said I was on the squad and declared me the captain, which didn't go over too well with the other three members as they outvoted me on everything a...Expand for more
nyway. We performed the same boring routine at every football or basketball event, NO school competitions, and wore the goofiest maroon velvet longsleeve, highneck, flaring mini-dress I had ever seen. My baton always got stuck in that stupid skirt flare! So Senior year, I joined the Varsity Boys Basketball Team as their "manager" which meant my duties were to clean mop the hardwood floor before each practice and sit on the bench at all of the games and yell "Go T-Birds!" BUT I did make a few good friends at Wasson that I'll always remember. Long story short after highschool-- went to work in Colorado Springs as a secretary for Dain Bosworth (a Stock Brokerage company,) then USAA Insurance, got married, had two beautiful boys, got divorced, went to work full time, moved to Sacramento, went to China in 90 and taught a semester at the Shanghai American Elementary School, got my Bachelor's, got married on Maui, got my Master's, and now I teach (of all things) Public Speaking, part-time at the community college level. Love to travel all the time back to Hawaii, mostly Maui though. My sister Val still lives in the Springs and I visit her a few times a year. Sandi lives in Utah, Connie in Fresno, and Mom and Dad in Heaven. I think I've Hawaiianized my 11 year marriage & my boys and it's definately a place we go now to get out of the ratrace and a place we are going to call home one day soon.
